Magdalena Abakanowicz

Poland

Magdalena Abakanowicz was born in Poland in 1930 to an aristocratic family. Her family endured the war torn years of WWII, but the magnitude of that event, and the later five decades of political unrest in Poland, left a lasting impact on the artist, who was only 9 years old when the war broke out. Abakanowicz studied Fine Art at the University of Warsaw from 1950-55. She has also received honorary awards from the Royal College of Arts in London, and the Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland. Her artistic production has included works in paint, fiber arts, and clay. She is most noted for her large scale figurative sculptures, having created over a thousand of them. These figures are often installed in large groups, increasing their visual and visceral impact, but they have never been seen all together. http://www.abakanowicz.art.pl
