Emilie Brzezinski

Czech/USA

Beginning in the 1980s, artist Emilie Brzezinski began making sculptures from found felled trees. In her studio in McLean, Va., she begins the process of altering and sculpting these trees. Wielding chain saws, chains, ropes and chisels she then creates a series of sculptures, "that simulate gigantic forests." As an artist, Brzezinski is interested in the process of creation as much as in the creation of a final product and seeks to uncover the essential forms inherent in the wood. Her work invokes multiple meanings as it, "takes on both metaphoric (the tree as life experience) and anthropomorphic (the tree as human) meanings."
